  1. Hello, I have big feet. Now that we have that out of the way -- i'm using Look pedals, but even with the cleat set as far in as possible, I'm still getting a little rubbing on the crank from my shoe. Would it be considered a bad idea to put a spacing washer on the pedal spindle to get my foot the extra 1/16" out from the crank? I wouldn't loose a whole lot of thread in the process and I'm trying to think if there are any other downsides.
Also, if anyone has this problem -- how did you fix it?
    thanks

  2. No washers, not enough thread!

    From: http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/pedals.html
    "Kneesaver" Pedal Spacers $44.95
These have standard 9/16"-20 threading on both ends. Some riders with unusual leg structure benefit from a wider pedal tread ("Q factor"😉 and these spacers provide that.

  3. I thought the Time RXE/RXS had adjustable Q-Factor.

  4. I don’t like the washer idea at all…. I think it would be better to modify your cleats by having the holes cut so that you can move them still further in, although there will be a limit to how far you can go with that..

Keywin pedals are available with long series axles, so maybe that’s an option or look into other pedals that will work better with your size of shoe.

    Cheers Jay.

  5. I have size 48 (13, roughly) Shimano shoes, and use Shimano Ultegra (SPD-SL) pedals and cleats. I have enough adjustability in the side-to-side direction to give me plenty of clearance. Different pedal brands are going to be a little different, and different shoe brands may also have a little bit of difference in where the cleat mounting holes are located.

I would think that washers that just pushed the pedal out a 16th of an inch or so, or even an 8th, wouldn't hurt the structural integrity of the threaded joint appreciably, but maybe this doesn't give enough improvement, either. The pedal extender is probably the best bet if you need more clearance than that. These things shouldn't really cost $40, but given the lack of demand for them maybe that's the best you can do.

so, dremel tool, ftw. good suggestion, although I'm happy to say i did this before i read your post. now, after one ride my "bad" knee doesn't seem so happy. I'm not sure how to move the cleat around to allow for the best float for my joints.
btw, I have look pedals, with red cleats (reasonable float). I have them under the ball of my foot, but can't tell if forward or backward is the way to go.
    thanks everyone
