I took the Shimano front derailleur off my bike because I did a complete overall (new bike to me) and now cannot get it repositioned correctly for anything. The rear of the cage where the screw is wants to hit the largest chain ring unless I move the derailleur very high, which causes the chain to run viciously on the back of the cage.
I must be missing something here. One thing I noticed is that when the derailleur is shifted to highest gear (smallest front chain ring) that is angles sharply downward when it is shifted. This is what causes it to rub. It works fine on the largest front chainring.

It sounds like the FD needs to be mounted differently than your current configuration. I think pictures are worth many words. Take a look at the Shimano site at URL: http://bike.shimano.com/product_images/FD/si_images/FD_6500_SI.pdf See if those pictures and instructions help. I know that it is a different model FD, but they are quite similar. You didn't mention if your mounting is braze-on or clamp-on. hey there-take a look at this article. the highest gear on the front is the big one, the highest gear in the back is the smallest one.... good luck!
