9 speed chain with a 7 speed cassette?

The chain probably has nothing to do with your problem. You should
double-check the shift cable to see if it's binding somewhere and that
it's properly lubricated.

If you want to get finicky, you could install an 8-speed chain, but the
differences are minor.

ATM I run SRAM 9-speed chain on a Hyperglide 7-speed cassette. Appart from
the chain wearing out faster, there aren't any problems.

HG 7s sprockets are 1.85mm thick, SRAM 9s are 1.8mm, so really the chain is
very close to being used on the intended cog width 🙂

Btw, I have this setup because when my FD broke I could only buy a 9-speed
one at the time, and the 7s chain needed a bit too much trimming with the
9s derailler.
