You push inward on the small lever to shift to a smaller gear. Push
inward on the larger lever (the brake lever) to shift to a larger
gear.
Physically speaking:
The brake-lever-shift works the cable against the derallieur spring by
winding the cable with a ratchet mechanism. The left brake lever moves
the front derallieur to the right and the right brake lever moves the
rear derallieur to the left. Shifts from inner to center ring requires a
lot more and firmer movement than from any other ring because of the
geometry of the chain and the derallieur cage.
The small/release-lever releases the cable ratchet mechanism in the
shifter mechanism one shift, so the left lever moves the front derallieur
to the left and the right lever moves the rear derallieur to the right.
You may experience a 'stutter' shift to-and-from the center front chain
ring from the inner ring. It's used to slightly change the front cage
position but doesn't actually force the chain to shift to another ring.
It's there to enhance derallieur/chainline compliance from front to back
cogs (keep the chain from rubbing on the front derallieur cage) caused by
shifting the chain from the extreme inner cog/outer cog limits on the
rear cluster. It can be felt as an 'almost' shift from inner to center
or from center to inner chain rings, usually by not fully depressing
either the brake lever shifter or the smaller release lever.
Unfortunately, only practice will make this second-nature since the left
and right shifters are alike in physical operation, but opposite in
actual gear ration effect.
