I have a Torpado Road bike that I'm replacing the drive train with using spare parts.
The front dual chain ring is a 53/42 teeth (existing Modolo setup), that's a 11 tooth spread.
The rear is a Shimano HG mountain cassette that's 30/13 teeth, that's a 17 tooth spread.
The total tooth spread is 11+17=28 teeth.
I would like to use a set of older Shimano 600 front and rear deraileurs. The shifter is huret downtube friction. So, I'm guessing that the Shimano 600 small cage rear should have enough capacity to cover a 28 tooth gear spread right?
I'm figuring this should get me over Calavaras Road, and Palomares Roads.

It's the 30t large cog that you need to worry about. It might clear but don't be surprised if you end up needing a mountain bike rear derailleur to keep it from grumbling in low gear. In my experience the Shimano road derailleurs usually don't work perfectly on anything over 28t large cog (long or short cage) but occasionally it works out.
