New light for LED nuts

  1. In November, Pelican will be selling a "state of the art" LED flashlight with a Luxeon
    emitter/precision reflector. Its about $31. It would make a pretty good spot along with a flood
    pointed lower.

    For what it's worth, LEDs are just slightly more efficient than halogens. This one uses a
    side-emitting LED and reflector to squeeze more light where you want it. Also, it outperforms
    halogens when your battery gets low, as halogens turn brown.

    Well... hmmm.. I suppose you know what you are talking about but my experience leads me to another
    conclusion.

    My EL-300 has the batteries I put in it last fall. Lots of hours on
    it. Dunno how many, couple months of 45 minute commutes at 3 times/week, some weekends, and I have
    used it for a flashlight some. Comes out to over 18 hours.

    Right before I got this light I had a Halogen. It didn't have 4 AA, it had 2 'C' cells. Dunno the
    capacity difference. But I could only make 1 1/2 commutes on a set of batteries. Lets say 2 hours.
    And the LED is brighter and wider.

    Now, I know you can intellectually shred this msg because it has no measured values, just casual
    observations. But I DID experience about 24 days instead of 2 days lighting!

    This summer a friend showed me his LED flashlight. Now this isn't for everybody, but just as an
    intuitive comparison.. this light has no battery. It has a coil of wire with a magnet that slides
    back and forth through the coil when you shake the light. It has a small capacitor that stores this
    teeney charge. The light shines for up to 5 minutes on a few shakes. They sell for about $25 and
    they are well built. I'll prolly get ten of them cuz I am putting it on my Christmas list and
    telling everybody.

  3. How bright are the LED systems compared to the Halogen & other systems that run on sealed lead acid
    & other rechargables? I like the price of LEDs such as the EL-300 & battery life is certainly a
    factor. Can someone direct me to a comparison chart that rates the available lights that uses the

  4. I recently purchased an ARC LS Premium which is just about the size of my thumb (though it sells for
    considerably more than what my digit is worth) and while it's not been on my trike some backyard
    testing lets me think it would get me home after dark should I ever find myself stranded. The fellow
    at this link has done considerable research on all sorts of flashlights and it makes for interesting

  5. cateye led 400 works real nice for commuter traffic the 3 led flashing mode really puts out a lot of
    light and you can easily angle the position of beam left or right to aim at car mirrors to aid in
    reducing doorings, i have one and ordered a second to mount one one each side , the red leds are
    good for being seen from behind, i like to be seen from the front also//

  6. My Toxy has an LED with a generator, and one cool feature is the light keepd burning for about 20
    minutes even when you stop peddling. So at stoplights and such, thekights stay.

    LED definetly outlast anything we have previously seen.

    I have seen those shake style lights. What we need is a generator that runs off the compresion of
    the front forks!
