  1. I've just joined Coburg Cycling Club (I live in Thornbury). Speaking
with Paul - the Treasurer of the club, I asked about the Club
    Championships out at New Gisborne.

I explained my lack of experience, lack of any sort of race pace, and
likened my experience of anything formal and gave an example of some
kind of pace that I can sustain.

Well I was encouraged to join in - and I said yes. 85km road race with a
Club I will have been an active member at for 8 days (my membership is
pending 1st of October turn over for licencing.

Having slight second thoughts now - mainly about making a bit of a fool
of myself - but keen as to have a red hot go. I'm under no illusions
that i'll be [censored] as by comparison to most people there. But still -
    Gotta have a go right?

You are very brave. Most people don't have the gut to do that and I
    respect you for that!

So go ahead and JUST DO IT! 🙂

I agree. There is no shame in having a go and 'failing'. You may even
    surprise yourself.

A word of caution: Racing can be addictive.

You gotta improve somehow right? 🙂 I reckon i'll consider it a success
if I can hang on to any bunch of 'em for the first 40km...

  5. Hi There P,

May see you out there I am doing the Masters 4 race over 55kms. I like the
hill top finish on Macedon. Just run your own race.... if you get dropped
treat it as a training ride. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Cool - it will be good to meet everyone. I'll be at the AGM as my first
meeting with my partner (we got a family membership and she got a
    ride-it licence).

Then off to the races! i'll be the one looking out of place on my CR1 🙂

If you feel comfy riding in a bunch, then give it a go I reckon. See you there.

That was my philosophy when I first raced. I could sort of keep up
with people who raced the same races, so I decided to race. And I
decided that I would be extrememly happy if I just made it with the
bunch with three-laps-to-go. For a longer race, hoping to still be
with the bunch at 40km is probably a worthwhile goal.

Appologies for spellings. This be my second nightshift. Telescopes
    are fun, mmmkay? </gloat>

Oh lord, i'm going to be riding in elevated company. Now i'm concerned for my health 🙂

  13. Okay - so how are most people getting there? Is anyone riding to the start for warm up?

    Joe Friel sums it up...

"Racers are among the most dedicated cyclists, in part because competition is so intimidating and yet personally rewarding. Whether you win or finish well back in the field, you can't beat the thrill of accomplishment that comes from meeting the challenge of a race. It's sure to get your juices flowing again" (Cycling Past 50-Joe Friel-Human Kinetics-Ageless Athelete Series)

The only 'failure' is to not give it a try. We all come last
    sometimes, it's part of racing.
Can I suggest you have a read of this, as the advice is good for road
races as well as crits :

I don't know about how Coburg run their club champs, but be aware that
    it
will probably not be a graded race, ie: you'll be riding against the
    top
riders from the club (in your age category), which on a flat course may
not be such a challenge (unless it's ridden agressively), but with
hills and winds may make it more challenging than a regular graded
    scratch race or h'cap.
