You can't do better than to stop in your LBS and talk it over with them. There are so many to choose from you could spend yourself poor trying to find the right saddle. A good LBS will have both good recommendations and saddles to try.

Best of luck finding the right one for you. Hopefully there are a bunch that'll do the job so your search doesn't take long.

Lots of saddles have cutouts or soft spots built into them. But I think most of the problems with pressure and numbness are caused by saddles too narrow to support the sitzbones, or incorrect setback/tilt for the way you're positioned on the bike. If the saddle is wide enough for you, make sure the saddles is set forward enough, so that you feel the weight on your sitzbones at the widest part of the saddle when you're pedaling in your best position over the cranks. Once that's set, if you're still getting numbness, try tilting the nose down slightly. Alot depends on your drop from seat to bars, and whether you use the drops or ride on the hoods all the time. Your weight and waist size plays a factor here also if you're trying to imitate a pro position.

Above is just based on my experience with saddles ranging from Brooks B17,Turbo-Matic,SSM ERA, SSM Aspide, Arione and SI Flite. They've all required some dialing-in of the set up and fiddling for the first several rides, as well as some miles to "adjust" to the new pressure spots. Aspide was the only one I just couldn't handle; seemed just too narrow for me, with the hard edges hitting right over my sitzbones.

  6. Fizik Arione. The best saddle for a tender scrotum. 🙄

I agree with this post. It's more about the saddle fit than about the saddle. I was at Interbike yesterday and was attracted to a saddle (can't remember whose it is) that has no padding at all, just a CF shell. I'm thinking of getting it if the width is correct because I don't think padding has anything to do with comfort or anything else. It's all about fit. The only people who seem to have figured this out is Specialized who have a sort of "butt meter" to help determine the correct width. Unfortunately, they have only 3 sizes, so it's sort of like going to the shoe store and they tell you, "You're an 11D. Now, which shoe size would you like, small, medium or large?"

  8. Saddles are a personal thing. What works for one person is not at all comfortable for another. If there was a saddle that was perfect for everyone, it would be the only one left on the market, but it does not work that way.

I like the Specialized Avatar in the 143 mm width.

Selle SMP Strike would have to be the best design have seen which aims at relieving pressure on those soft tissue areas. I had to look for an alternative to many of the saddles i had been riding as i started to pass blood in my urine.(which scared the hell out of me). The Strike took a couple of weeks to get used to, but now i couldn't live without it. Worth looking into.

  10. I concur on the Selle SMP Strike. I almost dropped off with several saddles [including the fizik] and the SMP sits under me like a cloud.

Look at their website for the speil - and then pick it up on ebay :-)

    Oh hell yea.

After the break-in period (which is wicked short) you'll feel great.
