Old Mavic Hub Tool?

I can't answer your direct question, but I can offer an alternative. I
just saw my LBS use a pin spanner (2 pins) to take the cover off a 501
hub a few days ago. I'm pretty sure this was the tool they used:

On a related note, I'd like an axle for a 501 rear hub. Know where I can
get one of those?

Would Mavic supply a replacement?

On a related matter. How tight should one tighten these lockrings? I
understand that the tighter you turn, more the rolling resistance.

A 2 pin spanner might work but it also might strip out if the cover was
tight, those parts are pretty soft aluminum. I'll probably try that in
a pinch.

I would just keep an eye on ebay and buy a whole hub when one comes up.
I've seen them go for pretty cheap used. The things last forever so
there are plenty still floating around.

I would imagine they would. I would be surprised if Mavic USA might
have something, but I'm sure they have them at their HQ where ever that
is nowadays. My wife happens to be at interbike right now so I asked
her to swing by the Mavic booth to ask around.

Those lockrings should be snug, they don't have to be super tight
though. You are tightening on the outside race...if I'm remembering the
hub construction correctly...so you aren't loading the bearings w/this
action, just locking the bearing in place.

The adjustment is done using a cone wrench on the small (15mm??) black
nut on the right side of the hub when the wheel is mounted on the bike.
You should tighten it to remove any play but there should be no binding
on the bearings at all.
