Hi Alex,

Considering konqueror support nearly every up to date technology i find
it odd this is happening as the effect is some fairly simple
javascript. Does the image open up over the existing window and not
grey out the background at all? There should also be some controls to
close the image aswell and return back to the parent window.

Might have to reconsider this if it causes a lot of greif. I have
tested this in a fair few browsers and admittedly, not konqueror as I'm
not a linux user.

Hi Andy,
Nice looking site. From a web designing view-point, is that website
designed from stratch or do you have a 'template' for creating your
websites?. I've put a website together for one of my other hobbies
(orienteering - www.saxons-oc.org ) which took ages to write but I wondered
how the pros did it!.

Add maps to the routes (Google Maps being obvious source without getting
into the expense of OS copyright fees).
Ideally with the route in some transferable format such as GPX (see
gmap-pedometer as an example of how this can be done).

That way a user can look at the route on a map, pull it off to ones own
mapping tools, and transfer it to most GPS devices.

I'm liking this idea. I am working on developing the site to use Google
Maps - its not the easiest to be honest, but getting there.

I'm going to have a look at the gmap-pedometer stuff and see what I can
do.

Ive not yet delved into using a GPS system for my travels, although
getting lost is sometimes more of a thrill than the ride itself!
Although I have friends who do use them for recording their routes and
performance. Thats also given me an idea!

Firstly there is already a rather well known UK mountain bike magazine
and website called "Singletrack" ( http://www.singletrackworld.com/ ). I
think the name of your site is a bit too similar, so I would suggest
changing it to avoid confusion.

Other than that, the site looks nice, and I think that a mountain bike
routes website is a good idea.
I agree with Nigel's comments re having some form of online maps, and
downloads in GPX format.

Download Knoppix ISO from www.knoppix.com and boot your machine from the
CD. Alternatively download the VMware Player and choose one of the Linux

Konqueror 3.5.4 here.

The "close" link in the pictures' frames returns me to the front page, but
the back button is disabled. Rather violates the "princple of least
surprise" 🙂

Disabling javascript enables the pages to be viewed "normally"
I see no other controls.

There is rather a lot of blank, black space above the pictures

..

Why use JavaScript to mess up something that browsers do by default
anyway? 'target="_new"' gives you a popup window, if that's what you want;
it's even valid HTML. Users mostly hate popup windows, but if you want
them, there's an official, valid, reliable, working way to get them.

A more serious problem is using fixed pixel sizes for things like DIVs and
so on. It breaks the ability of the browser to reflow your page to take
advantage of the screen real estate you've actually got, and, in
particular, causes your side bar ('The Directory', 'Useful Links', etc) to
get rendered below the rest of your content in both Konqi and Firefox.

I'd also strongly suggest you choose a different name. As someone else has
pointed out, 'Single track' is already the name of a well known and well
respected web site, and causing brand confusion won't help you.

There is a close button. But I'd advise you to get rid of the popup. A
better solution might be a pop-in - reserve an IFRAME or a DIV in the
layout for images, with a default image in it, and have that image
replaced when the user mouses over thumbnails positioned below it. This
only really works if the images are all more or less the same size, but it
allows you to show lots of images on a single page without popups or other
distracting mechanisms.

We did somethng similar on one of my sites. It generates potentially
very large diagrams, so we dispaly a fixed width thumbnail and a zoom
window - moving the mouse over the thumbnail scrolls the zoomed window
to centre on where the mouse is.

That kind of thing could be very useful for maps etc - upload a
relatively low res outline and have the hi-res map viewed through a
smaller window.

tried a lot of trails yet. The MBR trail at Coed-y-Brenin would have to
be a candidate though - it's great fun, especially on a hardtail. I
think full-sus would make it too easy, but that's just because I haven't
got one! The route is still pretty much as shown on the mbwales
website, although the section to the West of the A470 is no longer part
of it.

I did once do a trail at Coed-y-Brenin a few years ago, and nearly
killed me, but that was after not being as active as I was once. Its on
my list of to-do's.

Also, inr esponse to other posts about including GPX Data, having had a
look at how to integrate it, it is a little out of my reach to
implement something like that at the moment, I have thought abou
integrating the MotionBased system into the trails. So, what I have
done is include a section when adding trails, to include the URL to the
MotionBased page for the trail, if people use the system.

Its free to join and I have added a sample MotionBased route to the
only trail that is listed by me on the site, jsut to give an idea.
However, I still plan to integrate GPS data somehow, just dont know how
to at the moment.

Also, there is now a forum on the site and is now live. Feel free to
join and post.

I've now got support from some big cycling sites that are looking to do
a bit of promo activity on my site which I'm pleased abaout.

Also, Ive now got MotionBased links set up so if users use MotionBased
they can post thier trail URLS on the Single-Track trail so others can
view it.

I am still looking into how to integrate Google Maps and GPX into the
trails. For now though, I am resorting to simple goole maps of the area
of the trail. Not the best but its a start.

I also have a trail to use for the first Trail of the month, which will
be uploaded shortly.

Plus, the forum is now live. Why not register and post now?

The site is now coming along and have had interest from BBC Sport and
also, MBWales have backed it, and as a result, the site will have a
dedicated Welsh Trail section.

Some trails have now been added and more will be added over the coming
days and also shops (hopefully)

Subscribers to the newsletter are now rolling in and all are in with
the change of winning a years subscription to Mountain Biking UK.

And the forum is now set up.

For those that have asked, the banners are now set up and on the
banners page which can be found by clicking the link on the homepage in
the news section.
