Take registration number of bus. Route number, where & when & report it to
the bus company. Do it politely, calmly, factually (difficult though that
can be) and you may find that action is taken against the driver.

How do you know it's verbal abuse? they may be speaking Welsh.

It is the one job - well one of them - I could never envisage doing.
It just reminds me of what you see in Egypt where a donkey/ox/horse
goes around and around a well or some such place ad infinitum drawing
up water. Just going around and around. The number 24 bus is my life -
literally. Perish the thought.

Also live in Cardiff. Would agree some of them are not polite!

Some of the London bus drivers (with backing of the Mayor of course)
actually seem to get road ownership with commencement of employment.

This week, one of their number hovered behind me on straight road for 1/4
mile then overtook me on a right hand bend. Just around the bend he slammed
he the anchors on to pick up a fare at a bus stop [once stopped, he then put
the indicators on], causing me to come to rest too close for comfort at his
rear end. The emergency cut off was staring me in the face, but I resisted
the urge and then felt bad about not doing it all day :-(

I was thinking that he must know where the bus stops are, and whether there
was a waiting passenger or not, the fact that he *may* be required to stop
should be enough to prevent him from making such a maneuver.

Alos, I see an alarming amount of traffic that think it is acceptable to
pull in in front of my path to stop, at say traffic light queues, and then
go nowhere for a while, instead of giving me an extra 2 seconds to come to
rest in my *planned* stopping distance and stay in line behind me. And this
act really gets my goat[1].

I'm getting better though. I just accept it as coming with the territory,
and my tourettes is now 90% under control.

Today I have the makings of a cold, bubbly lungs and a sore throat, and will
not be going out on my bike. This also makes me mad :-(

[1] I don't actually own a goat, but if I did he would be called Starry,
whereas if I had a Shetland Pony he would be called Frapper.

Around here (York) most of the drivers aren't too bad. However, a lot of
them don't seem to know what an ASL is for (the other day some guy in a
white estate-van type thing decided that because I was in the cycle zone
behind the stop line, he had to be there too, and moved his var[1] so it
was half over the stop line, on my right. He was of course turning left.
Every so often someone will just stop their car right in the bike bit.

The other annoying thing road other road users do is underestimate my
speed, that or just assume that because it's a bike they MUST be in front
of it. This usually means they pull out in front of me, then force me to
slow down.

Peds are often the cause of sudden braking, as they step out in my path,
even if they've seen me, either they assume I can vanish into thin air[2],
that they can cross before I get there or I can magically stop to avoid
them.

[1] var: van / car vehicle.
[2] in fact a lot of them seem to assume I can do this when I meet them
(walking, without bike) on the pavement going in the opposite direction.

Single lanes, yes, although there is always an herbert who likes to "go
wide". Disagree on double laned [is that aword?] roads. Take the example of
two lanes approaching traffic lights. Right hand lane is a right filter.
Left hand lane is onwards and left.

Occupying a safe/proper location on the left lane does not prevent "the
overtaking using the right lane and stopping in the left maneuvre" rather
than a courteous slowing down behind. My point is, as I clock a stationery
line of traffic I am already calculating the stop. Having another car added
to line reduces my stopping distance.

Traffic fills lanes like rubbish fills a bin - horizontally from the bottom
up, not in nice vertical stripes :-)

A significant amount of my urban route has a setup like this. That is why I
smile more in the country!

Riding further to the right of the lane helps and makes it more
difficult for them to pull in. When it does occasionally happen to me I
tend to go round them and pull into the gap in front, using the greater
manoeuvrability of a bike, just to make the point to them

But if you can get to the emergency engine cut-off (which is usually, but
not always) at the back of the bus, then it is already in front of you, and
does not now represent a hazzard...

And, what if you kill the buses power *just* when it is needed to get out of
some other situation? you could very easily cause an accident...
