  1. I have a Polar CS100. I've been using it as
my sole cyclometer on one of my bikes.

Today, I rode a route that the CS100 measured
as 20.5km. Fine, except every other time I've
ridden this route, it's been between 19.9 and
18.1km. I've ridden this route about 20 times
over recent weeks. I've experience interference
with the HRM functions before but not the speed.

Anyone else had odd numbers come out of their
    polar of any model?

Around high voltage lines I regularly see 104km/h while doing 224 bpm
on my S720. If it's picked up interferance, it can over-read on
    distance.

Interference?? Surely thats just a standard E5 effort, yeah??🙄

Bleve has mentioned interference, and I've seen it on my VDO
speedo as an anomalous stored maximum trip speed of several
hundred km/h. I was able to calculate that the registered
speed implied a wheel rotation of exactly 50 turns per second
    (mains electricity frequency).

The other common explanation of a slightly higher distance
reading over the same course is that your front tyre is going
flat, and has a slightly smaller circumference (turning more
    often) as a consequence.

If you correct the file (Edit/Error correction) using the software the distance should reduce. It's pretty easy to see whether the errors are if you've been sitting on 160 and it jumps up to 240 for a brief period..... You'll get errors on the cadence, HR and speed functions at the same time.....

I did consider these effects. I checked my Max speed for the
trip and it was *not* abnormally high. And I didn't see any
particularly high speeds during the ride.

I've had interference with the HR before but not the speed.

This morning, the route reverted to it's usual length.

Some kind of interference seems most likely. There is a new
electric train line being installed down the middle of the
freeway south in Perth, I wonder if there was some testing
of the overhead power? Pure speculation.

There's a small error in my post - the distance should be
17.9 to 18.1 km. 20.5 km is approximately 15% more than normal.
I don't think it is a flat tire.

I also checked the settings for wheel circumference and it's correct.
So no meddling from my 3yo either. Interference seems most likely.

Me too. If you go into 'error correction' when looking at the graph on the
computer, and get rid of these speed errors the distance shortens
    accordingly.

If you're sure it's not a flat maybe you were busy dodging broken glass
all the way in? Could that add extra k's?

An extreme long shot but what the hey!

Not when the change is of the order of 15%, that would mean about
5cm reduction in the radius of the wheel. (Note: post should have
read 17.9 to 18.1 km). That reduction would be hard to achieve
    even on an MTB!

Are you doing the two-day "tour" next weekend? Gumby and I are.

Dont be so quick, I have been crook since the Herne Hill ride and have
only just managed to contemplate the ride into work. The very idea of
a 4 stage 2 day race fills me with images of sending snot rockets over
    my riding mates.
Can hardly breathe walking up a hill at the moment, let you know by
    Saturday.
See, and getting back to the OP, my hrm was right during the Herne Hill
race, my heart rate was elevated above where it should have been for
the effort and I guess I just speeded the illness from incubation, or
    sumfink.

I could manage a TT and a crit over two days I guess.

Hmm. OK. Get well soon. I want a lead out man for the crit....

And snot rockets are OK, vomit rockets, on the other hand...

Nah. I haven't ridden much for ages. Too fat and lazy ATM. Would have
loved to, to make up for last year. When I entered last year I won the
ITT, DNF'd stage 2 thanks to a broken spoke and then missed Sunday's
races completely cause I had to come to Bunbury to look at houses...

Good luck boys. One tip. If you don't think you'll place top 5 at
Pickering Brook, go easy and save yourself for the final crit. You
should do well at the ITT in B grade. 1 win and a couple of good places
should see you with enough points to cream the overall. Watch (follow)
the big old guys on the flat stages. They are canny sprinters.

Alas Shabby DeF does love his bike bling, just is very tight about
getting (forking out for) the best sort. I advised him to go for the
Polar s725 but he went for the cs100, no error checking, no data
collection, no groovy graph, not much, bugger all, didley.
So any errors are a result of his scrooge principles (1)
And his failure to read my mind and act as a lead out man ffor my
    suicidal breakaways.
    Steven
    (1) I did ride in this morning on DeF's fixie, which recently had a
wash! So he is not that bad.

Thanks for the tips Brett. I have been giving it a bit of thought and
checked out the results from last year. Your assessment tallies closely
with mine - I'll be targeting the ITT!

I thought about what jersey the points leader should wear in each grade.
Since the age of the riders generally increases from A to D, I reckon
it should be governed by dominant hair colour:
    A-grade: Black
    B-grade: Grey
    C-grade: White
    D-grade: Pink (ie scalp colour).
It just so happens I have a grey jersey. If I win the ITT, I'll wear
    that for the next stage.
