Usenet is free. Most decent ISPs provide usenet server as part of the
service. And then it's just firing up a freeware newsreader to access it.

If you're really using WebTV, you're probably stuck with what they give you.
Ditto for dial up AOL users.

Folks with "real" ISPs probably have servers available, and just don't know it.
SBC Global customers can go to http://help.sbcglobal.net/article.php?item=287
as an example for their settings (this is what I use). Use your ISPs help pages
to find out if they have servers (try searching for "NNTP" or "news"😉.

As for clients, they are myriad.

On Windows, Outlook Express works for some; I use Gravity. Forte makes a nice
reader.

Linux users seem to gravitate to slrn these days. tin and trn are older readers
that still work quite well. I believe Pine can do news as well as email.

Mac is one platform I'm not really sure about.

It's a bad assumption to think everyone uses an ISP to access the internet.

I'm really using WebTV, it uses it's e_mail reader. I do have the option
of accessing the group through online services though, like Yahoo. I
have a PC hooked up as well (I'm actually accessing WTV networks through
the same ISP I use for my Comp.)
