Yes, likely if you've got 6-8K miles or more that it's time. Other possibility might be the new chain. Did you clean off the anti-corrosion grease and lube it with a thin lube?

Also, last SRAM PC-991 chain I got was rough and noisy for the first ride, even with a new cassette on. After 20 miles, it quieted down and was fine. Almost like it needed some break-in miles. The Ultegra chain I replaced it recently with was smooth and silent from the first pedal rotation.

Yea i removed the anti grease and lubed it, also cleaned cog set. i guess it is time for new cogs. a new cog set is on the way, will i ruin the chain if i put another few hundred miles on it? thanks

Probably will just have an accelerated wear effect on the chain; eg, 200 miles on the old cassette would cause 500 miles worth of chain wear. But be careful.....you don't want the chain to slip or jump cogs when you jump out of the saddle. A big skip under load could mess up the chain, as well as some more personal gear 🙂

Thanks for your help DHK. i guess when the chain needs replaced its time to change the cassette. the 10sps wear quicker then the 9sp i notice.

I went through this same scenario recently. Had 10K miles on my DA 9 sp cassette when I put on the second replacement chain. My friendly mechanic at the LBS warned me that I might need a new cassette at 10K miles; not to be surprised if the new chain jumped under load. Sure enough, he was correct; I was back the next day to buy a new Ultegra cassette.

The old chain ran perfectly with the old cassette, but I changed it out when it hit the wear limit of 0.75% on the Park gauge. Also noted that the first PC-99 chain, running on the brand new cassette last 6K miles (to the same wear limit), while the second chain only went 4K miles. Since I kept my maintenance the same, assume this is due to the "used" cassette wearing out the second chain faster.

I've heard the 10 sp stuff does wear quicker due to the thinner cogs and chain. Since I'm big on strength and durability, not sure I want to make the "upgrade". Besides, growing up with a 5 sp and 7 sp cassette, 9 sp is still a luxury 🙂
