Who what? Peace...
No comments tonight in the pick-up zone. I've been experimenting with
helmet v. helmetless rides, in various combos of fixed gear, stealth
bike, decal-ed bike, baseball cap/no hat, helmet with "civvies" on, and
full bike club regalia (racer style), the last always with a helmet
"just because" (aka "sponsorship considerations"😉.
Background: A woman rider, practicing for a tri event or charity ride I
believe, on a bike-popular but busy local highway, was run over and
killed recently. A former city mayor here did a solo fall on an
organized weekend ride awhile back, got a head injury. He's really
pushing for an MHL, as is the local newspaper.
My test area is a local bikepath that has been politicized recently
with the addition, and thankgodforsmallfavors, later the yanking back
up of idiotic traffic islands that interrupted the bike path and were
supposed to make bike riding, ped use safer somehow. Cars have been
squeezed toward the center by new "parking lane" lines on both sides of
the street. That slows them down real good plus the effective bike
lanes are much wider. Interrupted by parked vehicles, but such is life
in America (IMHO, about as good as we're going to get at present).
Anyhow, recently the layout of this bikepath was a matter of heated,
rancorous debate. A place where it would seem cyclists are very
visible, so to speak ("Officer, I saw him, without a helmet" <g>😉.
I haven't had one "WHERE'S YOUR HELMET" directed at me when riding
without, and no "GOOD BOY's" when I've had the lid on.
The only difference I've noticed is that drivers seem a little more
agressive toward the racer outfit. An engine or two raced, a little
extra acceleration perhaps. Small potatoes.
Anyhow, my efforts to initiate discussion have, so far at least,
failed.
I'm most surprised that I'm not catching [censored] in the school zone. O THE
CHILDREN!!!
I like it, though! I mean, can you imagine? in this modern world,
people minding their own effin' business? How's that for cool?
