Hi,
I am new to this forum and this is my first post.
I am a very enthusiastic bicycle rider who rides for local transportation, excercise and pleasure (local, not too far in somewhat hilly central NY).
I had my second bicycle accident last Thursday. It was on my way to work. I was very very very lucky. I was hit by a car who turned L into my lane. I still sustained injuries. In Dec, I slipped on wet leaves (during a snow and ice free period of time) and broke a rid as well as other damage.
My old 10 speed 27inch bicycle is badly damaged. It was a good commuting bike; fast (I am often late), older (not an interesting item for theives). I am shopping for a new bicycle. Safety is my biggest concern. I cannot risk another accident (from which I may not recover).
Yes, I try to be careful and cautious when biking, yes, I could be more cautious (and will be).
Could members of this forum help this aging and convalescing person select a replacement bicycle? I am somewhat baffled by all of the selections.
Do I want thin tires, or thick tires, or very wide and thick tires?
Do I want gripp breaks, coaster breaks or disk breaks? Wire or hydraulic breaks???
I am 6 ft 6 inches. Do I want a very large frame. Do I want very large wheels? Do I want to look at custom bicycles?
I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences and opinions on the issue of "safety" with me.
Yours,
ES
