  1. My $25 garage sale bike has a frozen seat post. From what the guy at
the bike shop said, it would cost about $50 to cut it out, plus cost of
new post. I don't really want to spend more than $20 (US) on this.
Has anyone seen or made some sort of an adapter that could fit on top
of the old seat post so I could raise my saddle a few inches? (There
is something for racing bikes that is similar to this, but that costs
    $50 too.)
    Thanks.

    Dear R.,

You might be able to remove it yourself.

Sheldon Brown has fifteen ways to look at a stuck seatpost:

How have you tried to remove the post? Here is one way that often is
    effective:

    1) Remove the crank and bottom bracket.

    2) Turn the frame over (if you don't have a workstand, sit it on the
    saddle and handlebars.

    3) Pour a generous serving of penetrating oil or ammonia (opinions vary
on this) down the seat tube (through the bottom bracket shell). Keep in
mind that the seatpost is hollow, you want to fill that void to
overflowing, so the oil or ammonia is "encouraged" to go between the
seatpost and the seat tube. Remember, it's going to be messy when you
    turn the bike upright.

    4) Let it sit for several days, maybe a week.

    5) Turn the bike upright. Wipe up the mess.

    6) Remove the saddle, put a pipe wrench firmly to the seatpost, have
someone hold the frame, and have at it.

  4. My husband got a large wrench and got the seatpost loose. Thanks for
    the help.
