I was watching my DVD of Pantani winning the 1998 Giro tonight. He was
awesome to watch on those steep climbs, some over 20%. Too bad he had

I was standing in the freezing cold on the Peyresourde that year about
fifty yards higher than where he attacked. Seeing him burst out from the
group was awesome!

Did he ever perform really well in the Vuelta or in Spain at all? I know he
won Murcia, but still it seems rare for any cyclist to leave an impression
like this.

he was just really popular in spain. I remember watching the 2001
vuelta. He did the vuelta that year, hadn't had a great giro and didn't
do the tour. I remember phil and paul commenting that when the riders
signed on before one of the stages, he got more applause and cheers than
even the spanish riders! The fans just loved him. But i don't recall he
did that well at the vuelta that year....either he finished waaaay back
or not at all.

Pantani abandoned on stage 11 that year, but he was back in 111th place at the
time. That was the year that Jose María Jimenez won three stages and Filippo Simeoni
got off his bike, kissed it and carried it across the line when he won a stage. Oy...

hey, i remember that...and poor jiminez too, he had such a great vuelta
that year. What a shame.

One thing I also remember is that 9-11 happened right in the middle of
the vuelta...since spain is like six hours ahead of EST, they didn't
even know about it until late afternoon their time. I remember seeing a
photo of a group of riders looking at some spanish newspaper, with the
front page showing a giant photo of the fire, and I remember phil and
paul mentioning it.
