I'm fairly new to all of this too, and we recently discovered trails.com. You can plug in your desired start and destination and it'll give you routes. There is an annual fee, but they do have a trial period membership. We found a great route on it when we went up to Asheville, NC a couple weeks ago and decided to take a ride instead of golf. Cue sheet was pretty accurate - a couple minor things like a traffic light in place of a stop sign - but we never felt lost. You might also want to try mapquest.com. They have a fastest option, a scenic option - that might give you a good route.
