Front, yes Back, no
Back mtb hub spacing is 135mm. road spacing today is 130mm. In the eighites it used to be 126 mm. So, a rear mtb hub will not work on a road bike. Saorry,

How about checking with your local bike shop? They might still have 126mm rear hubs.
Otherwise, try ebay. You are probably not going to be able to find 126mm rear cassette hub, but freewheel ones should be available.

I assuming you want a freehub that accepts a cassette, not a hub which accepts a thread on freewheel(?).If that's the case, any used or NOS hubs which came from the factory with 126mm spacing will be either 7SP or 6SP.
What's the rest of the story? Do you have 7SP shifters? What is the frame made of?

If you read down the page a bit, Sheldon also tells you how to spread the frame. I'm guessing an 1980s bike will be steel, and it'll be a good choice for spreading the frame for a wider hub. (Unlike carbon or aluminum frames!)

Sometimes there are washers on the left side, which can be removed to give the narrower spacing. If the axle remains too long you can cut it.
If that won't work, there are plenty of old hubs around.

Mostly: Front, yes; rear, maybe. The same count of gears on the freehub will generally mean the same width, but there are exceptions. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug. Some gardening required to reply via email. Words processed in a facility that contains nuts.
In the process of building an all-purpose bike this summer used an old M730 7spd hub 130mm spacing. Unfortunately application was 135mm so had to replace the axle with modern version seems to fit. As said above best to shop ebay or other sources and maybe be able to come up w2ith solutions.

My road tourer (Schwinn Voyager) heralds from 87, and I've been using Deore LX hubs on it for most of it's recent years. I don't know what frame you're planning to rehub, but I forsee noproblem unless it's a super narrow racing frame.
