Penny knows far more than me, but I got a trek fuel 90 (full suspension) this summer for around $1400-$1500 and I have been very happy with it. My fiance has an older trek Y-frame with much better components on it, but he still keeps eyeing my bike covetously.
you might find it interesting to do a seach on Trek Full suspensions and chain suck sometime. I read enough stuff that you couldn't pay me to buy one, and this has nothing to do with JD's opionion, I found it all on my own.
.something around $1200, I guess. But, is that like total overkill for a beginer like me? I expect to keep the bike for a long time, so I'm assuming it will be worth it. I don't expect that it will make me a better rider, or anything like that, but I do assume it will make it more fun then on my semi-ancient hardtail. What do you think?
I've got a hardtail and I enjoy riding it - but I think one of the enjoyment factors is how good it feels the next day when I get back on my FS.

Well, if and when it ever actually becomes a problem, I will deal with it.
I read about the chain suck issues too. I also read consumer reviews suggesting that it was no longer an issue on 2003 model, which is what I got.
