  1. Anyone has any experiences with one of those seat post racks? Due to the
particular frame I got, it doesn't have any mounting lugs for a rear
rack and a seat post rack appears to be the only option. I am just
curious if anyone has any comment on them? Also, how stable would this
pannier compatible version be? I would like to be able to pack a laptop
    if possible.

I can't comment on this particular brand of clamp-on rack, but when
camping I use a similar seat post-clamping design for fetching small
amounts of groceries with folding panniers, and it works fine. I don't
know how well a laptop would hold up to road vibration and bumps,
though. I wouldn't subject mine to those forces.

Seatpost racks are ok I suppose. I prefer the Carradice SQR bags
myself. I use the Tour, which is great, but my laptop has to go in it
diagonally. A couple of my co-workers admired mine so much they picked
up ones of their own. They got the Slim version, which will fit most
laptops very nicely. Also the bag has some flex, so your laptop will be
more cushioned than on a rack.

Additionally it takes about two seconds to take the bag on or off, which
is handy for errands and what-not. Also the mount is easy to swap
between bikes, or you can get another one for $20 (which I have done).
One caveat, you could have clearance problems on smaller 700c bikes.

Another advantage is that the bag is in your windshadow, so you don't
get the drag like you do from larger panniers. This also helps make
them not have problems with rain (I live in Seattle and commute year
    round).

Does this sound like an advertisement yet?

Nice, but that plus a good bag or pannier will cost more than the
    Carradice.

4 P-clips and a cheap rack if your bike has non-monostay seatstays. If
it has monoseatstays, then 2 P-clips and one of those center mount
struts to go behind the brake mounting bolt. You can make your own
center mount strut by just bending one of the struts that come with the
rack. On sale, about $15 total. Then a cheap rack top bag ($20) for
most stuff. A laptop might require a cheap pannier ($35). Everything
    available from Nashbar.

I've done a complete brevet series using a cheap rear rack attached
with 4 P-clips. Carrying a 10-15 pound rack pack. Its plenty sturdy
for anything less than fully loaded touring panniers.

  6. I bought a performance seat post rack, and a mini panier bag that goes with
    it.

Rode 3,600 miles on transam with the seat post rack on racing bike. Not a
problem at all. The back of my thighs touched where it bolted on though. Got
used to it and didn't become an issue.

  7. Thanks to all on this subject. Sounds like a viable option and I'll dig
a bit further on some of the other suggested models and see what's best
    for my setup.
