Fantasy Race

    This may lighten the mood.

    If you could select a fantasy challenge race (it can be grand tour, one day race, stage race) from any set of riders in history - who would you select and why?

    To give you an idea :

    In terms of one day race fantasy challenge : I'd love to see Sean Kelly v. Erik Zabel, as I consider them to be the strongest one day/TDF points jersey riders
    of the 1980's and 1990's respectively.

    Next up :

    Marco Pantani v. Federico Bahamontes or Charly Gaul.
    Superb climbers all.
    Bahamontes and Gaul were super climbers of the 1950's/60's.
    Pitted against the greatest climber of the 1990's : this would be a showdown.

    Next up :

    Coppi v Merckx.
    This would be a classic race : Coppi's career cut short by WWII would have had a palmares to challenge Eddy Merckx in terms of overall wins.

    Next up :
    Greg LeMond v Stephen Roche 1987 : LeMond was recovering from a serious gunshot wound. Would Stephen have won a triple crown in 1987 if LeMond was there?

    Finally :
    Phillipe Thys v anyone from the modern era : for me, Thy's (winner of three T'sDF in the early 20th century) was the first cycling superstar.
    I have no dobt if he was in the mdoern era, using modern equipment that he too would be a great opponent.

    A TdF containing Hinault, Anquetil, Merckx, Armstrong, Indurain (each at their prime).
    Why? It would answer the question as to who was the best TdF rider.

    Easy :

    1.Merckx.
    2.Hinault.
    3...................Maitre Jacques.
    4.Indurain.

    Maitre Jacques's tactical awareness would just pip BigMig.

    Eddy in his prime is simply unbeatable.

    DeVlaeminck vs. Musseeuw in Roubaix

    DeVlaeminck vs. Merckx in Liege

    I'd like to see Jan Raas out there, too, in the Raleigh colours, of course.

    How about the TI Raleigh team v. Renault 1983-1986 ?

    Or TI Raleigh team v. ONCE 1990's ? (ONCE might be a bad choice, given recent developments).

    Boonen v. DeVlaeminck would be a great tie.
    (I'm presuming that Diablo is referring to Roger and not Erik!!!!!!!!!!!)

    Yeah, Roger. A couple of those match-ups actually happened but only a fantasy that I could have seen them.

    OK, Jan Raas and Roger in a Amstel Gold.

    There are so many intangibles that any kind of fantasy question would be meaningless.

    What team would these riders be on, who is their D.S..what about the equipment manager? what bikes will they use?

    BTW, Pantani beats CHarley Gaul up any climb by 4 minutes.

    Fine, I will bite:

    1. Da Vlaeminck vs. Boonen vs. Magni at the Ronde.

    2. Add Coppi to any Grand Tour challenge.

    You've got to put Lemond in there.

    1) Hinault
    2) Armstrong
    3) Lemond
    4) Merckx
    5) Indurain

    If you haven't seen him ride, pick up a video. On style points, Hinault was the finest. Then Moser (a bullet train) followed closely by Merckx. Well, let me say Moser in the saddle had the best style. Hinault out of the saddle... well, no one compares. The guy used to reef on his handlebars like he was trying to pry open a manhole cover.
