A friend of mine recently bought her first bike with Campy gear (Centaur), and has an intermittent problem: when trying to change one gear up (smaller cog), the rd moves too far, ending up between cogs. I can see this when riding with her by the chain's rattling and skipping until she shifts back to correct it.
On the trainer it doesn't happen for me (or for her when I'm over watching!), and the bike is much too small for me to ride on the road. I've never had Campy, and obviously this can't happen with STI. I've cleaned and lubed the relevant bits, but it hasn't helped.
ISTM that even if you accidentally hold down the button too long, it shouldn't end up between gears. Can any Campy gurus suggest what the problem might be?

I dont know about Centaur shifters, but my Veloce ones from 2000 can move up 2 gears if you push the lever in all the way.It seems that your friend could be pushing a bit too far to shift up. The down buttons also do half changes on mine, or maybe I didnt push them down enough, or perhaps I dod 1.5 up shifts. User error is my theory. can probably be solved by adjusting the derailleur. first thing i would do would be to put it on a stand, chain on the big chainring and the rear derailleur on the fourth cog (from the smallest one). make sure that the derailleur pulley is aligned with the cog. if not play with the right adjusting screw on the derailleur. that's the adjustment according to campagnolo owner's manual for the rear derailleur. if everything is like it should, it may just need an adjustment of the cable tension at the tension adjuster. most of the time it doesn't take too much.

apart from adjustment, make sure the cable is clamped onto the correct side of the derailleur pinch bolt. if it's on the wrong side, the pull ratio is wrong so it's fine in some gears, not in others.

Of course it can and does, if the STI is as misadjusted as this bike.

Then adjust them.

Tighten the cable a half turn and it'll be good again. Or take it to the shop she got it from and have them do it.

Soinds like a simple RD adjust. Campag 'overshifts' to get the chain onto the cog, then self centers...I think the cable is too tight, turn the RD barrel adjust 1/2 turn clockwise.

Thanks, that sounds plausible.
What a difference that cable tension make. I had to adjust this due to unresponsive shifting and now my Campag FD/RD are really snappy. I love it. I understand that I'll need to keep adjusting until the cables fully settle in... A few months. --

Proper installed cables don't need to settle in and certainly not a few months.

Really? I was told by LBS where I bought that it'll take some time to stretch and settle. They are offering two free services over four months period to cater for this and other run-in issues.
In any case, adjustments were needed after 1-2 weeks. No ideas if this will continue over the next few weeks. I guess they may have referenced by the mileage of more casual riders. --

Did you ask what happens to the cable and housing during that time? When I install new cables and housing I take care that the housing is cut/grinded square, the ferules are seated properly against the housing and cablestops and the cable properly seated under the attaching bolt. Adjust the RD and that's it. The tension in the derailleurcables are low. The don't stretch.

The bike looked to be well put together, all pretty solid. But it's true that the gear shifting became more difficult after the first week and was fixed by a turn on the cable tension adjuster. I don't know what stretched or compressed but something sure has happened. --

Well, if you know what is happening and how (easy) it is to solve yourself it's not a big deal. But there are a lot of people who don't know nothing about adjusting a rear derailleur. They have to go back to the shop and 'accuse' Campy for bad shifting...

Yes, blaming the equipment is easy but I just can't believe Campag can make bad shifters. So in my case, as I am not familiar with this new bike and Campag, I did take it back to the shop. They confirmed the procedure and I guess I've learnt another trick. Slowly picking up more knowledge here. 🙂 --

Cables do stretch and housing does compress....after a ride or two it is done..

Thanks again and your earlier tip on adjusting the cable tension. Going to be taking a long ride this morning and will see how stable the cables are. 🙂 --
