What I think does not matter much. As always, the risk of buying a bike on-line is that it might not fit you, and it will not be set up correctly (or even if it was set up correctly when it left the warehouse, it will get knocked out of alignment in transit.

The bikes are the best you can expect for that price, but they are below most entry level bikes in terms of frame and components. If that is all you can afford, if you are sure that you are ordering the correct size, and if you know how to assemble bike and adjust the fit, derailleures, and brakes (or if you can pay a LBS to do the work), then go for it.

Also, check your LBS just in case. Right now is the time of year that bicycle manufactureres are going into next year's models. You may be able to find a good deal for not much more. Plus you'll be happier with a bicycle that is properly fitted to you. Good luck!

Ignore the advertising blurb. They claim: "Take advantage of our exclusive promotional pricing of $459.95 and save almost 50% OFF from suggested retail of $795"

First up, was the bike ever advertised at $795 for any reasonable period of time? Secondly, does the retailer actually have any sales records that prove they sold any bikes at $795? That sort of advertising reminds me of Persian floor rug merchants. What Bikes Direct are selling is a bike worth $460 new, but it's a not a recognised brand like Giant or Felt. If you buy it and want to sell it again, it's harder to sell because you'll be competing with known brands.

thanks, i really dont want to buy a bike online, because of the fitting issue, and quality, service, etc. but A LBS near my house is having a big sale this weekend on road bikes and i looked at a trek 1000 this week, and if its on sale i might be able to get it. but i'll be spending ALL my money, so no cycling gear. i am hoping i'll have enough to get a tire patch kit and some tubes and a portable pump. i already have helmet, lock and light from my other bike...

Tire patch kits run about $3.00, and my LBS through in a spare tube at no charge.

The Trek 1000 is a great entry-level bike. Also, LBS's will do a lot to retain you as a customer, so maybe if you ask politely and flash a smile, they may throw in a tube or even a water bottle and cage (I was a sucker for that one when I worked at the LBS!) Hope you get the bike and enjoy it!

The best thing about buying local is that you can test ride the bike to make sure you like how it feels.

I tested a Fuji Royale. It looked GREAT and rode like [censored] to me. I was coming from a front suspension MTB. The Fuji was too jarring. I could feel the texture of the road in my hands.
I then tested an 05 Specialzed Comp that was on sale for $850 and it was like finding the right guy. This bike has carbon forks with gel inserts and the same inserts on the seat post. I don't feel much on that bike.
Had I just bought the Fuji I would have been unhappy and spent $800 on a bike that I'd have had to turn around and try selling on Craigslist.

Craigslist is another plase to find bikes. In my area I can find just about anything biking and for decent prices. Look there as well as at the local bike shop sale.

Perhaps you could get your LBS to throw on Bontrager's Hard Cases.
I believe the Trek 1000 is the best entry level road bike out there.

what are Bontrager's Hard Cases?

Bontrager is what Trek decks out it's bikes with.
Bontrager Hard cases are puncture resistent tires.
The Trek 1000 comes stock with (???not sure of tire, but it is Bontrager???)
a less than forgiving tire that is puncture prone, from what I have been told
by a friend that bought the same bike.
