shifting / STI problem

Technical blowups on the shimano Europe site. maybe a flush with a
spray lube, while trying to shift up and down...'may be a failed STI
lever, certainly not unheard of..pretty common actually.

The blowups don't go back to those series.

Maybe it's related to the cable tension? What exactly is "cable slack", how
tense should the cable be when on the smallest cog?

I read something about flushing them out with a spray of lube. How is this
exactly accomplished?
