  1. At the risk of coming over a bit Pratchett[1], is my addled state, or does
there seem to be a mechanical ballsup fairy as well as a p*nct*r* fairy?

In a nutshell, no matter how well stocked the shed, something is always
caused to break or turn to cheese when the LBS is closed for a long weekend,
and you have no spare. This bank holiday, I snapped a gear cable on Sunday
(thankfully robbing a replacement from another bike), the holiday before it
was spoke snappage. Is anyone else observant of the MBF's activities? Is the
    MBF related to the PSF?

    Enquiring minds need to know...

[1] Terry Pratchett - The Hogfather. Create your own genie by suggestion
    alone...

What are you doing, having no spare spokes and gear/brake cables?

Cables are usually very cheap from rallies like York or Mildenhall and
they will act as a charm; once you have stock up, you will never need
    them...

Your problem is that you only have one bike. When you have many bikes
there is always one that is just about ridable with only a few minutes
    fixing.

    For example today chez Causer:

1 ready to go, but I'd like to get a harder saddle
1 ready to go, and I've just bought the replacement chains it needs
1 ready to go, but new spokes & rims are essential before going far
1 ready to go, but new rear wheel & complete drivetrain urgently
    needed
1 need to give that front fork more Plus-Gas to get it apart to rebuild
the suspension (it's over 40 years old, so allowances must be made..)

    Mike,

Whose was the bike he robbed then?

My saddle was stolen once, but I've never had the gear cables go from my
    bike while it was parked!

Good point! But Tim doesn't say he robbed from one of his own bikes....

What? Me? Apart from pedals, lights & reflectors I don't think there's
anything that could be robbed from one of my bikes to another, apart from
the constant exchange of bits that goes on between my two 1960s Moultons
(they do it when I'm not looking).

Guilty as charged. My problem is I tend to give stuff to other folk when
they need it. I had spares for the ridgeback (the bike I robbed) but tended
to donate to - um - more deserving causes. I never thought to get spare
cables for the Dawes... I've never actually had a cable on a modern bike
    snap before yesterday :-/

Heh. Like 99% of the spares I've got...

No, he was here before. Definately.

I think you should investigate the contents of your hat - or maybe my

It was my old Ridgeback that donated. None of the family bikes looked like
the cables would be long enough...

I spend a lot of time fixing local kids' bike-shaped objects, much stuff
ends up recycled between them... there seems to be a running expectation
that a cheap Aldi bike lasts a year, is ditched, and a new stovepipe special
acquired from... probably Aldi. Hey Kev, where's your old bike? Usually
produces the required spares to bodge the new one.
