  1. ...I can bodge a SIS gear cable into an STI geart changer? Had a cable
    break yesterday, no spare and no bike shop handy, but I do have an SIS based
    bike not doing anything for a few days...

    the cables are the same but you'll probably need a much longer one for
    STI, are the SIS shifters on the down tube? if so unlikely

    No, they're mountain bike index shifters on the handlebar - it's a bigger
    bike so I should get away with it. Thanks.

    Yup, got away with it... the nipples are identical (due to the mounting
    hook, the STI nipple looked bigger). and robbed cable turned out to be about
    3cm oversize. Phew - that was close...
