Which country are you in? How much money? Is it for use off road, commuting, occasional use?
See if there is a bicycle maintenance course given in your area, perhaps by a local cycling club. You will make a better bicycle purchase and will be able to enjoy whatever you buy much more.

well some good mountain bikes would be a specialized rockhopper. the rockhopper is made of aluminum, and unlike the hardrocks it has an upgrade in all it's components. For example some hardrocks have rst shox which is good but not as good as the manitou axel shox the rockhopper has. Usually it's price is anywhere from 500 to 700 dollars depending which bike shop you got to. The rockhopper is more towards actual mountain biking than normal riding. A good all around bike that's good for transportation, easy mountain bike rides and a great price is the specilalized rockhopper. The hardrock sport is really what it is in it's name a spoty bike. The comp is also used for normal riding but is much better than the sport for mountain biking. The hardrock pro is equivalent to the rockhopper. But if you are someone who bikes everyday, does either downhill racing, or mountain biking competitions you would probably want a rockhopper comp, or any kind of stumpjumper, or s-works. these three bikes are the top of the line in mountain biking but also in price. for these you are looking at anywhere from 800 to 6000 dollars in bike.
