Real chamois (leather) is usually available from leather craft shops, but I have not used or even seem it used in cycle shorts for 10 years.

Why would you want to?

20 years ago I bought real chamois leather for my knicks directly from a
tannery in South Fremantle. The problem I found was that after you
washed it, it dried out and went quite stiff so the first 5-10 minutes
wearing them were uncomfortable. The new synthetic inserts are much
more comfortable and allegedly have anti-bacterial properties.

Last time I was in UNO in Elwood (Vic) they had some made up 'chamois' inserts in the display case under their counter. - might be worth giving them a ring.

Probably a lot of old chamois nickers in bottom of people's drawers that
could be recycled. Can I post you mine?

Thanks but no thanks. A lady in our club wants to make some for her husband and wanted to know where to get them from. I wasn't sure where to start so thought i would ask here.

I'd say any leather hobby supplier would be able to help you. They are great,
but high maintenance - I still have one pair, still the most comfortable ones I
have - but they do need re-oiling after each wash, and my supply of lubricant is
nearly gone, after which time I'll use pure lanolin.

you can get synthetic ones (*much* better than leather), try
rowbust.com, or any of the other cycling clothes manufacturers.
They'll have samples etc that I'm sure they'd be happy to send to you.

If you wash chamois leather I'm pretty sure you'd have to oil it afterwards.
It would definitely be stiff and potentially scratchy afterwards.

It would definitely be stiff and potentially scratchy afterwards.

Have a look at horse riding jodhpurs the type they call sticky bums -
these have a "chamois" on the bum and you just wash them and they stay
soft. See where there made and ask etc.

Or if you want long knickers 🙂

ah yes, I see. But they are not padded either. I wouldnt want to ride in my sticky bums on a bike for any distance. 😉
