After riding around the river last Saturday (in Perth) and getting soaked, my bike needed a good clean. At least a teaspoon of sand came out of my chain in the process.
Anyway, I discovered I'd been riding with only 4 of the usual 5 chainring bolts. The bolt that attaches to the crank (chorus cranks) had fallen out at some unknown point in the past.
Would hate to have that fail during the sharp end of a race. I see it as a wake-up to do a quick check of bike before saddling up, especially for races.

I had that happen to me 20 years ago. I discovered it when the chain ring deformed while I was riding. The small chain ring became scrap metal.

Good thing you found it now. I got a broken collarbone from crashing in a sprint as a junior due to a loose chainring. You have probably never seen anyone more fastidious about doing up chainring bolts than me.
