I need a way to get good exercise in winter months
I was thinking abt buying a recumbent exer bike from
Schwinn
But could I get a good workout using a mag trainer?

1. Riding a mag trainer is like a riding an unlubricated female. I
recommend
an exercise bike instead.
2. Riding a properly lubricated female does not provide nearly
as much exercise as a bike. Maybe it's different in France
or maybe I lack the proper riding technique.
I've ridden various Cyclops trainers and now own a Giant Tempo, which is a
spinning type bike..
I much prefer the Tempo. Much more solid and stable, especially for
out-of-the-saddle work, (I'm about 6'3 and 230) and it keeps my bike free
for quick rides when the off-season weather is good. A nice spinning bike
(there are other several good brands) also allows a lot of adjustability so
the fit and ride can be pretty similiar to your regular bike.
The big issue is cost. Mine cost $900-1000. Is it worth the money to you?
A mag trainer is a hundred or two. If you have an old bike, you could
dedicate it to the trainer.

Do you normaly ride a recumbent on the road? If not, then you'll be
training and developing a slightly different muscle group on a
recumbent exer bike compared to the muscles required for upright
riding.
Get a mag trainer and look up some training programs.

Get a fixie and ride outside, unless you live with feet of snow.

I like my YMCA membership a lot more than any rollers or trainer, for
the simple reason that the home can be kept free of exercise-induced
trauma. Including the trauma of using an expensive "whatever" as an
auxillary clothes hanger for the stuff that fits when you're fat.
But seriously, a Spin class, crappy Tomahawk bikes and silly
instructors and all, can be a great place to check in. Some days, they
have consecutive one-hour classes, so the choice to walk out or crawl
is all mine.
Plus the cardio room (bikes like the one in your link, treadmills,
steppers), free weights, machines, sauna, shower, and don't forget that
all-important social part, young man:

No TMCA where I live
Must exercise at home in winter
Hence the idea of a mag trainer

Mag will work. Probably safe to buy used, as most of them probably have
about as much use as my Cyclops <g>. Which actually, I bought to use
for warm-up at the track, as I burned out my trainer circuits long ago.
Got mine fairly cheap, refurbed from somewhere. Poorformance?

IMHO, better than any of the Barca-bikes I've ridden, although the
display panels can be a nice distraction.
If you're looking at a stationary bike, I've heard good things about
the Lemond units. Infinite adjust is a biggie, much better than pegs
and holes. --D-y

My YMCA has the LeMond Revmasters, which are decent.
For the OP, I would either look for a used LeMond or Giant exercise
bike or go with a trainer. I would not buy that Schwinn recumbent.
I have an older bike that I use with my trainer, I wouldn't want to
beat up my main ride.

Just remember, my preferences are just that, I'm no expert on fitness
bikes.

For $550 I want a bike I can take off the trainer and go ride. hell for that you
can get a bike and a mag trainer.
I recently got a Blackburn online and am entirely gruntled with the thing. Very
smooth and well built.

yes
that's why I ask abt the mag trainers
I have both.
I bought a spinning bike. It was pricey but my wife and daughter use it as
well. I also put my bike on an old fan-style trainer, an old Vetta. In the
winter I use them about twice a week, normally riding for an hour or so.
Sometimes I ride one. Sometimes the other. And sometimes I switch off
between the two. If I think I'm going to be on the spinning bike mostly, I
play some music and treat it like a spinning class.
One advantage of the spinning bike is that it's easier to simulate climbing.
You can crank down on the tension and stand on the pedals. One advantage of
having your road bike on a trainer is that it's "your" bike. When you start
riding outside again in the spring, your muscles will be familiar with the
bike.
So to answer your question. Yes you can get a good workout using your bike
on a mag trainer. But without distraction or variation to your workout, it
will be boring and an hour will seem like 2 hours.

That looks ok. If you do get a trainer despite my advice get the one
with the rollers
pressing against the rim vs the one with the roller against the tires.
I don't like
how my CyclOps feels. Maybe I should get a video of people having an
intimate
social life and watch that while pedaling to distract myself.
If you get a stationary bike make sure there is a setting that provides
you with
an adequate resistance. Cardio room at work is full of old stationary
bikes that don't.
I like recumbent stationary bikes much more than the uprights
even though I ride an upright road bike and am probably training
the wrong muscle groups.

The transition only takes a couple of rides. The hardest part is
not laughing when the rear wheel starts hopping around because
you're not used to (a) the fore/aft degree of freedom and (b) the
fact that the rig weighs about a fifth as much.
The good news is, if you're diligent about using the trainer as a
training tool, you'll actually go faster on your bike in the spring.

Spin class. Not as good as a ride, but way more fun than you
think before you try it. Especially if the crowd it draws is cherce.
