go with the 3". Everyone knows it isn't the size of the rollers, its how you use them!

If he's not used rollers before, I'd suggest you get him the Kreitler Challenger rollers (4.5 inch).
The smaller the drums, the more resistance. You can get a good workout on the 4.5 inch rollers and,
if you need more resistance, you can add their "Killer Headwind" fan unit. He can do that later if
he feels the need. I understand that the 4.5 inch rollers are a little easier to ride. Also, last
time I checked, they were a little cheaper.

I have the Kreitler 4.5" and the killer headwind. I highly recommend the combination.

That's kinda pricy. Why not just the 3" rollers without the headwind thingy?

When I ordered the rollers, I do not remember seeing the 3" model. However, having the 4.5" and the
adjustable headwind allows me to vary my workout pretty easily.

I've got the dynolytes (3" drum) with the headwind. I would recommend getting the 3" drums, after a
few rides, the learning curve will be met and he'll wish he had the smaller drums. With both smaller
drums and the headwind unit, I can drive my HR way higher at slower speeds than the road.

I have a set of Kreitler 4.5" rollers right now and have owned several other sets (other brands)
that also have 4.5" rollers and have NO complaints about them.

Of course, since I have never ridden the other sizes, I can not give an opinion about them.

My suggestion would be to get one of his buddies to chat with him and see if he has an opinion about
a particular size.
