Does Shimano apply a finish to it's cycling components?
For example, Shimano's new 105's have a smoky finish.
Is the tone of this finish in the alloy or has it been sprayed on?

Any pics? I believe Shimano (or was it Mavic?) anodises their rims to produce a black finish.

Is the tone of this finish in the alloy or has it been sprayed on?I have the new 105 and looking very closely, also at the small scratches, it appears to be a clear anodising, as the alloy underneath is a slightly lighter colour. It may also be just the fresh exposed metal. I would take a guess and say it is not a spray on, as the Dura-Ace alloy and Ultegra alloys look significantly different. Spray on also adds a surprising weight.
