Very few complaints from peds or traffic and evidently no-one EVER
opens a car door to jump out and walk :-) Exellent!

Hands on the bars near the stem most of the time . Wooooooooooo

Notice that the peds meekly wait in the middle of crossings and traffic
doesn't object much at all AND no one EVER seems to open a car door to
get out and walk!

Notice the guy on fixed heading down the bridge at high speed with
his feet on the bars....and the bike has no brakes!

Makes me want to go and ride my bike 🙂

You're calling them loonies because you don't understand the job they
do daily, and the environment they ride in. As NY bike messengers, they
have to have an atavistic and anarchic attitude to even simply get
paid. So the job attracts that kind of person. They live life at the
coal-face of capitalism in a seriously cyclist-challenging city that
makes London seem as bike-friendly as Amsterdam. Just setting off on a
bike downtown in major US cities is already quite a rebellion. Notice
that everyone was riding fixed. Fixed is good in a flat city when you
want a lightweight, simple bike (messengers 'can't afford' breakdowns
in both senses of the phrase), but riding fixed really discourages you
from stopping for any reason.

'Alley Cat' competition events as in the video are held so that
despatch riders can risk their lives racing without the annoyance of a
controller screaming at them down the radio to go even faster, and cut
even more corners. I didn't like seeing the rider spraying-up the bus
tho'.

Nope I am calling them loonies because I feel that going on the wrong
side of the road and straight through red lights and pedestrianans is a
stupid thing to do.

There is a video on that site that is actually of a bike messenger in
Boston (Boston's deadliest messenger)and he doesn't seem to cut through
nearly as many pedestrians he tends to go behind them rather than right
through the middle of them and his riding against traffic does seem
safer rather than the "there's a gang of us so you cars will need to
stop" riding of the "races".

You're missing my point. It may well be stupid, but the conditions and
the job encourage this behaviour, so although they were not working,
they were not behaving too differently from every-day.

The race took place in New York, and was an 'alley cat' event,
organised by bike messengers. The majority of the participants shown
on-screen clearly seem to be messengers, even if they are from the
Boston contingent.
