just got myself a new road bike... a trek 1400 which absolutely rocks my world !!
is chainstay protection common on road bikes ? i know it is on MTB which ones are good for a road bike ?

Yes there common on road bikes, the most common type is a light weight chromed curved sticky thing that sticks on much like sticky tape. any bike shop will have them for $5-$10 pick one that looks good because the job they do is very simple.

chances are ur 1400 has one already. you might not notice it but there might be a clear tape-like protection on the chainstay much like a sticker but in the shape of a chainstay protector.

actually.... you're right, there is a clear tape protection as you said. Is that enough though ?

That is all I have ever had. It gets dirty, especially after the first ride after I have lubed the chain. I wipe it down with a clean rag, and the chainstay is as good as new.
