  1. Got suckered into doing a 10 mile TT last night. Rode out to the local
meeting point to see if anyone was mad enough to turn up with it lashing
down and with lightning in the air.

Local hardman Derek - he of the CSI glasses

    http://www.simonmason.karoo.net/zdes.htm

was going in the opposite direction and nobody was at the bus stop meeting
place. Oh well, never mind, I'll head off home to get warm and dry. Big
Derek had turned around, collared me and before I could use any of the 10
excuses in my head, talked me into doing a 10 across the Humber in
    Lincolnshire.

After a miserable 12 mile ride to the start line, I asked 3 different people
the route as I hadn't a clue what it was. Unfortunately, they all gave
different instructions and said there would be marshals out there (there
    weren't any).

I was also on a standard bike with clip on mudguards. Anyhow, got pushed
off, turned Kraftwerk up loud and tried to ignore the rain. I was number 15
with one guy behind - had to stop 3 times to read the flaming road signs
along the way. Looked around to see if the guy behind me was anywhere, no
sign of him, so not doing so badly. After 8 miles came to a crossroads and
hadn't a clue where to go, so took a wrong guess as I found out when the guy
    behind went the right way.

After turning back, I kept him in sight to the finish and ended up with a
28-50. Well chuffed that there were 4 people with slower times. Just got to
start saving up for all the aero gear now ;-)

I'd have been happy with 28-50 without having to stop to read road
signs and adding extra off route sections in..

Hate to think what you can do if you take the mudguards off and know
    where you are going..

You sound like a proper old-fashioned club cyclist.

12 mile ride to the start; most excellent!
And you didn't even mention that you (obviously...)
had a 12 mile ride home.

Most of the "athletes" unload their bikes from their
    estate cars.

Congratulations - that's an extremely good time for a first TT. Beware,
    they're addictive.

    Anagram: I'm soon broke.

  5. Well done you! I'm sorry the course wasn't marshalled properly - it should
be. Sadly it's not the first time I've heard of this happening - where it's
    'assumed' everyone knows the course.

    It'll be clip-on tribars next...

    then a TT-specific bike..

    Then the carbon wheels...

    The rear disk wheel...

To get you off in the right direction, Nathan adores his Zipp wheels and
    recommends them ;-)

    Cheers, helen s

Under the circumstances that is a bloody good time. A combination of
good weather, knowing the course, riding a race-prepared bike, and not
being cold and miserable at the start would probably knock about 4
minutes off that time for the same effort.

I heard that rain is actually good weather for time trialling - there's
more available oxygen or something ...

I used to set targets for my PB on the course I rode most often, and buy
goodies for the bike when I met them, otherwise there's a danger that
you'll try to buy faster times without actually improving your fitness
    much.

What I do with my son is similar. The first time he rides any given course,
that's his base time for that course. Next time he rides it, if he improves:
small reward given. Then there's his overall PB too. Whenever he does a TT
he's not 'racing' against anyone, he's doing it purely for his own benefit -
to improve his own fitness and times whilst having fun doing a sport he
    enjoys.

Yeah - that's what all the old bods were saying last night. Lots of oxygen
in the air, but unfortunately I found much of it bound to hydrogen ;-)

Yeah tell me about it. I've been looking on e-bay for a TT bike already. I
feared all this would happen once I got sucked in, but I could put it off no
longer! I was actually getting a rollicking for riding out to TTs with the
lads, only to go off of my tod while they did their thing. So it was sort of
a way to shut them up.
