I'm noting problems in both knees, which may or may not be made worse by cycling.
I suspect not as they don't hurt on the bike, just off it!
However, I figure someone here has had enough knee trouble to know of a reasonable knee doc I can consult.
If I were you I'd go see a 'sports' physio first.... from cycling you can get some quite bizzare muscle (and tendon) imbalances which don't hurt on the bike but stairs, downhill walking and sitting still (and sleeping even) can hurt like buggery. I'm sure a physio will have you leaping onto the ceiling in pain in no time (and then recommend a means of treatment), and if they can't find anything wrong with their probing and testing _then_ go see a doc....

ps don't just leave it till something goes snap unexpectedly - this is a pic of the inside of my knee thanks to a gross cycling-induced muscle imbalance and a moment of madness on the basketbll court http://factotem.org/library/images/Photo-Album/kpa186.shtml For a fleeting moment I thought I was MJ...

Also, consider finding a good podiatrist. They're not just for feet, they're for legs!

Does this mean cycling is not a good standalone sport for one to take up? --

A GP who looks after a lot of runners and cyclists and has a lot of experience with knees is Irwin Light at Sydney Medical Centre cnr George and Bathurst Sts ph 9261 9261.
I forget how many marathons he's done (many) but he does know a thing or 2 about knees from personal experience.
I might well try that. I was also considering the Cheek Monkey branch at Centennial Park as they were the only fitters I knew.
I am a bit concerned about the fit because I had to put the cleats all the way over one side of the shoe and the right side still feels a bit odd so I may need pedal extenders.

No, my experience is based upon heavy training for track and crit cycling (big legs) and stupidly combining that training load with competitive District basketball (for which my training was nil, only played games - yes I am tall I don't need to be able to dribble or catch - haha ;-). Extremely strong quads, combined with relativly weak hanstrings meant my Q:H strength ratio was very high - I just simply sheared my Anterior Cruciate Ligament off when stopping suddenly. I have since learnt different ways to stop and pivot for court sports (ie don't stop and turn using the outside leg, pivot with your inside leg).
If you do more than one sport train properly for both of them.... it hurts otherwise :-(
On 2006-08-18, Gemma_k (aka Bruce) was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea:

Proof that fixies are bad, mmmkay?

Zebee
I am currently seeing Ken Crichton (North Sydney Sports Medicine, Crows Nest) for knee probs. I think he is pretty good. He is a sports med specialist (not a surgeon) although I don't think sports med is a recognised speciality in Australia (yet).
