Hi, I have been cycling in Melbourne for a few months, generally on Beach Road. However I am cycling on my own which gets a bit lonely and I don't have anybody else to motivate me to get up bright and early on those less sunny and dry mornings!! All advice is to join with a group of others but I have no idea how to find a group - have asked a couple of cycle shops but the only groups they recommend go too fast for me as a relatively new starter!! Any tips??

Shelly, join the Bicycle Victoria forum a number of the forum members have been getting together on Beach Rd over the last few weekends and they have a wide range of abilities, so you won't be left behind.
Also, the Women's Cycling forum has information of a few groups that get together for rides on Beach Rd on the weekends.

Try Mascot Cycles on Bridge Rd in Richmond. There is a group that starts just after 7am on Saturday mornings. The group gets bigger as they go along. It's an easy ride through the city and to Port Melbourne before heading towards Mordi. The pace is easy up to Black Rock. There the pack splits with the faster riders storming to Mordi while the rest goes at their own pace. Everyone regroups in Mordi before heading back. That's how I started and found it a very good social bunch.

Thanks. I live in Port Melbourne - what time do they typically come through (presumably down Bay Street?) -
Not sure... I would say Beach and Kerford at about 7:25. Look for the bunch with lots of light blue tops with orange and yellow splashes..

From the BV Forums There is a ride being organised for Sunday August 20th. Varying length and start times. There will be a Port Melbourne to Frankston bunch. Port Melbourne to Mordialloc. Frankston group will start at 8am, and Mordialloc at 10am.
Anyone is welcome to join in. Starting across the road from The London pub on the foreshore. Register your interest within the thread by copying the text of riders and appending your name to the interest list.

Good call on the Mascot ride. Nicely paced for beginners (or occasionally if you are really unfit and feeling lazy :o )
I think Cyclesport Victoria has a specialist Women's Co-ordinator or department that might be able to assist.

Yo, shelley also consider this--

And then there is always Pink Inc run out of Kennedy Cycle Center in Black Rock which are setting up a beginners group for both Hybrid/Commuters and road race bikes.
