I'm brand new to cycling and want a bike to go on day rides and ride 1 mile to work. I'm 235# and want a MTB, I'm going to get street tires for smoothness. Thanks for the help. Feel free to ask me any needed Qs.

Sub $300 range...I know Giant has one, Giant Boulder...I think is the name of the bike. Steel Frame...thats about all I know. I think that Trek and Gary Fisher also have MTB in your price range.
I would highly recommend saving for a little longer and get an aluminum bike!!! Not only lighter...but you usually get better components, which make adjusting and tuning a little easier.
