The geometry of 2001+ rear derailleur models is the same so will index correctly and there is enough
travel. That only leaves the jockey wheels (and jockey wheel bolts) and I've read conflicting
views/reports on whether 10sp jockeys work ok with 9sp and vice versa. You could try the mech as is
first then change jockeys if necessary. Pre 2001 rear mechs are different so won't index perfectly.
The whatdyamacallit ratio is 67% vs 70% (or other way round?). I'm sure the fugures are correct
anyway! :-)

Front 10sp mech has an extra part that is supposed to help with the narrower chain but I've heard
9sp front mechs actually work ok with 10sp.

Rear derailleur needs to be compatible with the shifter (and cassette width) not the cassette
spacing. Spacing between sprockets is always irrelevent to derailleurs.

Campag may say it's not compatible but I don't think it's true (with 2001+ models). I've done the
sums* and the geometry is the same.

* using cable pull and ratio data from the CTC "Beat the System" article (kindly pdf'd to me from
a member) .

The cam on the hanger is different, I cannot see a discernible difference with the jockey wheels
even though they are different part numbers.

10sp jockeys are 8.4mm wide, 9sp are 8.8mm

What part number is that?

The only difference I can find between Centaur 9 and 10sp rear mechs is the jockey wheels.

Yes indeed but function with them will be different (in theory) so you're supposed to use 10sp
jockeys. In practice some people say the 9sp ones "work fine" with a 10sp chain.

The 9 sp jockey wheels do seem to work ok with a 10sp chain, as does a 9sp cassette.

You mean page 23, or page 22 in the 2003 catalogue, in the 2001 the part seems to be RD-VL009 later
replaced by RD-RE116. Plus the cammed spacer at the top pivot of the cage seems to be different.

The VL009 is the Veloce version. RE116 was used by both 9 and 10sp 2001 Daytona and later mechs.

I agree, I think it is more likely the spacer at the top of the cage that makes a difference,
whatever, the only thing required to fully convert the rear mech is the new cage assy. part no.
RD-CE001T(10s medium) or RD-CE101T(10s long). I think the front will be fine regardless of the
small plate.
