For those that have problems with their integrated headsets, it has
been suggested that the "cups" could be machined to accept a threadless
headset.
What are the restrictions on doing this? Caveats?

in the chris king rant against integrated, it's mentioned that they
tossed out the idea of creating a headset or headset standard based on
machining integrated headtubes and then pressing cups into them because
not enough material is necessarily present to support the pressed fit,
or something.

can only be done if the head tube internal diameter is small enough.
and that's often not the case. there's no intrinsic difference between
an integrated headset with cartridge bearings in an angled seat and
pressed cups with cartridge bearings in an angled seat - so don't sweat it.
