This might be one of those little noobish FAQs but I just wanted to double check before upgrading my sick bike. Thanks guys.
1. Will Ritchey cranksets like Pro Logic or Cross V function smoothly with a 9 speed shimano 105 group? Their catalogue says its compatible with the octalink shimano BB's.
2. Is an 8 speed shimano hub compatible with a 9 speed 105 crankset? (sigh....I know right..)
3. Say I prefer a 12-25 cassette. I love flats but I prefer that occasional sweat on hills. In fact, I want to increase my hills a bit more than last season. I require a double crankset. I have choices between 39-50T, 39-53T, 42-50T, 42-53T (all shimano 105's) and 34-50T and 38-48T (ritchey pro). I know you really have to ride this and get a feel for it. In my case, LBS is nearly 30 miles away so I just want to get it online and fit it myself. I have no option of trials. Whats an ideal tooth ratio for me?

I don't know why not. I'd prefer ISIS over octalink, myself.

That's all about you and how you ride. Spend some time with Sheldon's gear calc in the MPH for a given cadence mode to see where you land and find gears that match.

I think a 50-36...get the compact, and get a 36t-add it on.

Thanks ron, that helped me a lot. Why do you prefer ISIS over octalink? Doesn't it have a decreased bearing life? And what would be my advantage of a compact crankset over the usual ones.
Also, not considering dura ace, is there a one-type-fits all bottom bracket for all shimano "9 speeds" ?

ISIS is a more accepted across the industry, and I just sorta don't like proprietary shimano any more than I have to.
Not knowing a thing about you and how you ride, I've got no clue whatever what crankset would be advantageous for you.

FYI, although there are many mfrs who make Shimano 9 compatible cranks, i.e., use Octalink bb, only Shimano makes and sells an Octalink bb. I don't believe it allows other mfrs to make that style bb.
As for "one-type-fits all" bb, it probably depends on the spindle length. Standard road bb using Shimano 9 style crank are 109.5mm. Triples are longer (118mm?). I believe there is also a 113mm spindle length too.

I think the 'standard' 50-34, the 34 is a wee bit too small, is all. I think a 50-36 is a more useable combo is all. You can get many compacts with 50-36 instead of the 50-34...some shops will swap the rings for you-like we will...

It's about 6%, which on most cassettes would be about one gear lower. It's just a bit less of a change than going from the 27 to the 29, and a larger difference than going from the 26 to 27.

Went on a hilly ride Tuesday, hit a grade that measured 14-15% [1] for at least 100 yards. Ouch! Glad I had the 26T granny chainring on.
