Yesterday, as I returned from a long ride, my pedal broke. I've been riding on this pair of Look CX6's for 2 years. I'm sure of the time span because I bought the bike (2004 Specialized Roubaix) in 2004. I bought the pedals separately while the bike order was being filed. So, I never rode the bike with different pedals. I've been reading about the disastrous results of broken pedal axles. However, in my case, the axle didn't break (thank goodness). It looks like the pedal itself became detached from the axle. LOL, as I pulled up in my driveway, off came the pedal still attached to my shoe. How common is this? I'm looking to replace the pedals with some other Looks and I was wondering if I could expect this again. Should I just change pedals every two years or so? How can I inspect them to identify wear so I can avoid big trouble/injury?
BTW, I'll make pictures of the broken pedal available.
I have once had a Look pedal come off the spindle and have a buddy to who that happened. However, these were both early model units where Look had not yet learned to reverse thread the fixture which held the pedal body to the spindle. We both just squeezed a bunch of Phil grease in there and screwed it back together putting red locktite on the threads. Never a problem again.

Some models of Look are known for that. Sure, after impact but also after just lots of mileage.
Notice that on your model Look, the bearing and spindle assembly is attached to the pedal body with a nylon collar. You can see where years of flexing would work that joint apart. Check that for tightness a few times every season on an older pair. If they walk out repeatedly try loctite. And of course the chain side pedal cartridge is reverse threaded. Offside is normal thread.
I'm sure there's a broken Look spindle some place but in general this has been a reliable design over _many_ iterations. I'm surprised you didn't notice the pedal looseness and wider tread ('q'😉 before it came apart. Good thing you weren't out of the saddle!

Oh I did notice something was odd in the last couple of miles. It felt like the the cleat was loose. Approaching my house and slowing is where it came complete off.
