  1. Needing to replace the pads, I wonder if there are people who have used
both Kool Stop and Swiss Stop. I am really please with the latter, but
many seem to like the former.

No need to offer opinions that are not based on experience, thanks.

So, only people who have used both pads can repond? I'm out.

Geez Sandy, brake pads aren't that expensive. Why don't you try a set
of the Kool Stop and you be the judge.
I would be interested in your evaluation.

I have never seen Swiss Stop at my USA LBSs.

    1) Can you easily find Swiss Stop? If so, and your experience is
positive, why not use ist again?

    2) A while ago I went to an LBS, looking for Kool stop "refillabe"
pads. The guy said he did have the kool stop supports, but he had the
refills from kools stop, and the suports from Swiss stop.
The suports + pads from Swiss stop where "dirt cheap", at least
compared to the kool stop pads; I bought both, and following the guys
advice, trashed the Swiss stop pads, and used the kool stop ones.
So, I guess this tells what the guy felt about the Swiss stop versus
    Kool stop pads.

    3) From my experience, I have only good things to say about kool stop
pads - they seem softer than most others, adapting well to the rim,
don't squeal, break rather well, and so far seem to hav good
    durability.

Now let me ask you, about your experience with Swiss stops: do they
    brake well in the rain?

(My On/Off pads in the front wheel do not break satisfactorly in the
    rain, and squeal like hell in dry weather when I press them hard;
compared to the kool stops, they seem to touch a much narrower part of
the rim, despite being wider than the kool stops, which leads me to
    think they're too hard. If/when I replace the On/Offs, I'll either use
the red fibrax - which I find break like crazy in dry weather - such
as when you get sacred from a car puling in front of you, and you
rapidly squeze the brake levers hard - or just go for another pair of
    kool stops.)

the real question is, what brakes do you have?

the new shimano pads are excellent both wet and dry. campy aren't bad
either. in both cases, i'd stick to factory issue. the only pads i'd
consider replacing are the previous generation shimano, [7700 etc.] and
that's more to do with aftermarket pads addressing the issue of the
permanent toe angle trapping grit than anything else. kool stops have
a scraper lip which mitigates that to some extent, but i'm /definitely/
not a fan of ks salmons because their wet stopping distance is
    dangerously extended.

bottom line, if you're a shimano man, spring for the new calipers. they
feel better, have the excellent new pads and also the orbitally
adjustable holders. the best on the market right now imo.

Do these new shimano pads have a name, or just a mix of letters and
numbers that I can never memorize? (Just about as bad as Japanese
    motorcycles models...)
Do they have a distinct appearance from previous Shimano pads?

    Name? Url?

Are you talking about BR-7800? Found it here
    http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/12874-040_SHIFC4-3-Parts-159-Brakes/VBrakes/Shimano-Dura-Ace-Brake-Caliper-BR-7800.htm

If so, don't take it personally, but I find this big improvement in
brake pad adjustment, prove of past incompetence (from Shimano and
others, of course): the first time I had to mount caliper/road style
brake pads, I grabbed a few "orbital adjusters" from v-brake pads,
replace the original screw with a longer one (to acomodate the orbital
adjusters), and forgot to register the patent of the idea ;-)

Shortly after, since I have more weight to lose in my body that in my
bike, I replaced the "road" pads by v-brake pads, mounted on calipers
(yes, I did)! Never looked back.

What makes me curious about this BR-7800 brakes, is that, according to
    Price point,
"For the first time, NEW Shimano Dura Ace Brake Caliper employs a
front and rear specific system that is more powerful and lighter than
    the original Dual Pivot design."

That sounds clever (especially the "more powerfull" part of it). Any
descriptions/explanations from someone who has seen this in real
    life?

i looked at that, but wanted to keep the caliper spacings the same as
oem - there's more depth to the mtb mountings.

lack of orbital was definitely focus on the wrong objective. shimano
went to great lengths to design their calipers to toe in both activation
/and/ original set. only one would have the objective, and original set
    had the grit trapping problem.

a little thicker = a little stiffer. no witchcraft necessary. the real
point imo is that the shimano pad material has been upgraded and very
much for the better. add the fact that we now have orbital mountings,
and we have a real winner.

Humm... as I expected, I'm not likelly to remember that until I get to

By the way, is it my impression, or most online shops do not sell
Shimano brake pads? Fibrax, kool stop, wtb, etc, are everywhere, but
    Shimano ...?

    i guess it's academic, but 2 reasons:

    1. retains the correct spring pre-load on the brake cables. not that
    there's much difference.

    2. the dual pivot mechanism uses a lever between the two arms. it's
designed to operate within a certain range of motion, and its bearing
surfaces accordingly. again, operation outside that range may create
premature wear if the bearing surfaces aren't seated per the "expected"
    position.

will this stop anyone using them as you suggest? no. am i picky? yes.
and that's all there is to it!

Well, thanks kindly for not answering my Q.
    Ciao !

  15. When you decide if you like Kool Stop I have a pair of cantilever style
Eagle 2 Kool Stop unopened for the buying price of $6.75 the red kind.
Turns out I bought the wrong kind.

  16. Kool-Stop Black pads on a Giant road bike with the mediocre generic
calipers made a very noticeable improvement in stopping power. Have not
tried other brands but heartily recommend the Kool-Stop.
