Hope this is the right section. I'm a brand new road cyclist and I'm a bit worried about falling at 20+ mph. Is there anyone here that rides with full pads on, meaning knees, elbows, hips, shoulders and obviously helmet. I'm not thinking heavy hard plastic here, just some sort of light padding to protect against roadrash. Like for shoulder pads, ya know how in football u have a thin foam pad that goes under the big bulky plastic shoulder pads, I was just thinking of wearing just the think foam padding. suggestions?

the Keirin (very rough, track races) riders in Japan often use padding, but they crash a LOT

http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/?id=hakodatekeirinI guess the idea is that we're supposed to fall off so infrequently that it's not worth it to pad up. 🙂 It would add weight, makes us much hotter, less aerodynamic, etc.

^^lol well thats a bit overkill, im more worried about road rash then breaking bones. For example bicycle shorts have padding between the legs, why not have a simalar padding sewed into the sides of the bicycle shorts? use open cell foam and make it full of holes so u still get cool. does such a product exist? (if not no stealing!!)

I've heard stories of guys sliding cardboard down their knicks for a race, but I dunno if it's true
are you racing? if not, crashing shouldn't be a problem.

If you need it, you should look at the MTB downhiller's kit, bit funny on a road bike though.

You'll get over it. A helmet and gloves provide all of the protection you really need.

+1When I was shopping for a new road bike I asked my LBS guy if I should be concerned about the alleged fragility of carbon frames; he said the type of crashes that do structural damage to a CF bike would also do some damage to a metal frame. Then he asked me when the last time I had been in a bike crash was.
"30 years ago" I told him.
"So, you're not planning to start crashing again just because you bought a new bike, are you?" he says. "Quit worrying."

I have fallen exactly twice, and both of those were when I was nearly stopped. The only thing hurt was my pride.
