Last night as I was locking up the place where I work, I saw an older(?) Fuji hard tailed mtb with a rather unusual frame. The down tube left the head tube at a normal angle but then about half way down it made a strange curve upwards and then met up with the bb shell at a funny angle. It looks to me (and my un-experienced eyes) that the bike was designed this way for increased tire clearance in the front. Any thoughts or knowledge of this design?

I think I saw one of the oddest ever yesterday. This kid, about 16 had taken a mountain bike and welded in enough metal to where his seat was about 8 feet high as was everything else he needed to ride. I looked like a stock 26" MTB on the bottom that he had somehow managed to weld in enough tubing to make a really 'high rider' out of. How he got on or off I have no idea, and it just had to be when I was using a car to get to Wal mart to buy more computer stuff than I could put on a bike anyway. I don't bike there anyway since the newer, 'better', huger Wal mart decided that bicycle lock racks are no longer for them. There are a lot of adult riders in this area, mostly due to either DUI's of just can't justify the expense of a car, insurance (gouging), or the gas to drive their macho 6 MPG 4 X 4. They all have money to spend at Wal mart but Wal mart seems to be trying to cater to the car only crowd.
Anyway, back OT, this kid probably didn't worry too much about his bike being stolen since I don't think anybody could ride it. Bill Baka

Jim just built himself a mini-tall. The back half of the frame is a trail-a-bike thing. It's welded to a few other frames up front. The saddle is around head height. The wheels are 16". It rides nice too. -- zk

It may ride nice but it sure stopped traffic, and me. Weird. Bill Baka. I am thinking if he puts on the front brake he is toast.

Fuji Marlboro?
There's one listed on eBay at the moment, item 300008909365
Such oddities-without-reason tend to be marketing-driven styling exercises. I can't think of a good reason to make the downtube in that shape, and I can think of several good reasons not to do it. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug. I thought maybe they did it that way because it's a folder.

Looks to me the reason might have had something to do with the folding mechanism.
Missed that. Looking at the way it folds, that was probably the cheapest way to get the lower pivot. I can't say that I'm impressed. But what could be expected of a bike that's named for a brand of cigarettes? -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug. Some gardening required to reply via email. Yes thats the exact same bike I saw. I didn't look close enough to realize it was a folder. Stange looking ride though.
