Dear Phil,

It's just Oz slang for a gas pump. A fellow named Bowser was the major
manufacturer of gas pumps in Australia. During the wars, the phrase
spread from Australian troops to New Zealand and Britain, and was
eventually applied to the gas trucks themselves.

Annoyingly, I find that it's not listed in my father's 1943 3rd
edition of "A Popular Dictionary of Australian Slang" by Sidney J.
Baker, price three shillings & sixpence. Rotten war profiteering, no
doubt. (I learned it from trashy UK and down under fiction.)

Regrettably for my late Professor Ross's etymological love of bawdy,
it has nothing to do with the bawdy nautical expression to bowse up
one's jib, which is what you may have had in mind. (Unless you merely
dropped a -r- from "browser".)

As someone who commutes daily in Perth (rain or shine) I've certainly
seen an increase in bicycle commuters. It's especially noticeable in
winter (ie now). When I started 3 years ago, my bike was the only one stored
in the bicycle rack in the building basement. The rack only has 5 spots,
it's full most days now. This happens even on days when it rains - I now see
other cyclists on my 10km commute whereas a rainy week 3 years ago
would have me seeing no other cyclists for that week.

per litre which equates to USD 6,50 per American gallon.

For a previous posting, note that AUD 1,40 per litre equates to ca USD
4,00 per gallon, though still a lot of money.

Robert's $4 estimate looked good when I checked it yesterday.

1 U.S. gallon = 3.8 liters

1 U.S. dollar = 1.40 Oz dollar

(1.40 Oz$/liter) x (3.8 liters/U.S. gallon) = 5.3 Oz$ / U.S. gallon

5.3 Oz$ * (1 US$/1.40 Oz$) = 3.78 US$

So about four bucks US buys a gallon of Oz gas.

Ya gotta divide by that 1.4, not multiply.
