The Colnago has an ITALIAN threaded BB & cups ...

[center]BOTH sides are right-hand thread.[/center]

Hopefully, you have not inflicted damage to the frame ...

I realise that- I rebuilt the BB using a campag axle but with another make of left hand cup ( Italian thread). I forced nothing - everything fitted perfectly - it just doesnt turn nicely and I am not sure what is worn out. Also, I used standard bearings 1/4, and I dont know if campag requires special bearings or not.

Sounds like a bent spindle.
