http://eurosport.com/cycling/tour-de-france/2006/sport_sto924752.shtml Time trial winner Serhiy Honchar is under a legal cloud in an Italian doping investigation, French daily Le Monde reported on Wednesday, the day the Ukrainian lost his yellow jersey. Honchar is accused of "possession, concealment and consumption doping products," during the 2001 Giro D'Italia.
The current T-Mobile rider was recorded discussing use of illegal products while he rode for the Liquigas-Pata team in 2001 the newspaper reported.
If they are even vaguely fair and objective he's gone in the next couple of days. Wanna bet he stays for the whole Tour? Bill C

Makes me wonder... - Birillo is actually a commen surname in Ukraine - And Honchar also fits the famuos 16 sec on stage 8 in the Giro - And the name of Bassos dog is by his lawyer claimed to be Tarello

T-Mobile received confirmation Wednesday from Italian authorities that doping charges against Serhiy Honchar from the 2001 Giro were dropped in September L'Equipe has reported. French daily Le Monde republished the accusations of "possession, concealment and consumption" in their Thursday edition. The French newspaper reprinted recorded conversations between Honchar and his then Liquigas-Pata team doctor which they said implicated him in the San Remo doping probe from 2001. But the Ukrainian, who won this year's time trial and wore the yellow jersey for T-Mobile for three stages, was reportedly cleared of all charges in September.
Nice of them to print the allegations and not print the fact that he had been cleared. Just another example that they are on a campaign and while not lying outright, will fail to present anything that doesn't support their position. That's what propaganda outlets and tools do, not news journalists. Unfortunately it seems to be a much more common thing today. Bill C

Going by Eurosport reporting what Le Monde said, we don't know what Le Monde printed. Also, if the Italian authorities are this late in informing T-Mobile that he was cleared last September, who else did they not tell?
Le Monde's standards or not, the question is whether there needs to be some kind of statute of limitations on the rule that sidelines riders involved in a doping investigation. It would be pretty ridiculous to exclude someone from the race based on a five year old investigation; the dope cops should have been able to bring charges or wind it up long ago. But from the dope cops's point of view, there's no real incentive to reach a conclusion, depending on how their particular country's injustice system works.

Agreed Ben. Brian has proposed a clean break for possible past infractions, resetting the sytem, and going on in a rational manner with draconian penalties for doping. I think it's a great idea if they reform the anti-doping system while they are at it, but you're right there definitely needs to be a statute of limitations. Bill C
